Medical Acupuncture & Dry Needling

Medical acupuncture, known as Dry Needling, is a specialized procedure where an acupuncture needle is inserted through the skin to activate myofascial trigger points (sensitive areas) within muscles and connective tissues. This technique is employed to address issues related to neuromusculoskeletal pain and movement limitations.

What is Medical Acupuncture & Dry Needling?

Medical acupuncture and dry needling are skilled interventions that involve the use of acupuncture needles to penetrate the skin and stimulate specific myofascial trigger points within muscular and connective tissues. These techniques are employed to manage neuromusculoskeletal pain and address movement impairments.

A myofascial trigger point is essentially a muscle knot that develops due to overuse or excessive strain, causing muscle pain and dysfunction. Dry needling is utilized to address dysfunctions in skeletal muscle, fascia, and connective tissue, making it a valuable approach for treating sports injuries and muscle pain.

Session Duration

Each treatment session lasts for one hour. Your initial session will encompass a comprehensive consultation to understand your primary concerns and assess your past health history. Based on this information, your practitioner will devise a treatment plan tailored to your specific needs. It’s important to provide information about any medications or supplements you’re taking, as well as recent test results. Following the consultation, there will be time for a brief treatment.
The duration of cup placement typically ranges from 5 to 10 minutes, depending on the specific condition being treated. In some cases, multiple cups may be simultaneously applied to various areas of the patient’s body. Additionally, certain practitioners may choose to apply small quantities of medicated or herbal oils to the skin just before the cupping procedure. This allows them to glide the cups along specific acupoints or meridians after the cups have been affixed.

Number of Sessions

The number of sessions required varies depending on the severity of your symptoms and the nature of your condition. During the initial consultation, we will collaborate to determine a suitable schedule that aligns with your individual requirements. However, typically, clients are seen once or twice a week for the first four weeks.

Does it Hurt?

You may experience a small, noticeable pricking sensation when the needles are inserted, as they penetrate the skin. However, this sensation should not be painful.

Attire and Pre-treatment Recommendations

It is advisable to wear loose-fitting clothing for your therapy sessions. We recommend refraining from consuming a large meal, strong coffee, or alcohol immediately before a treatment.

Falling Asleep During the Session

Falling asleep during the session is quite common and nothing to be embarrassed about. Many of our clients enter a deep state of relaxation during the process.

Post-Session Sensations

After a medical acupuncture and dry needling session, you may experience muscle twitching during needle insertion, and some soreness or muscle ache for a day or two afterward, akin to the feeling after a workout.
