What is aromatherapy?
Aromatherapy involves using plant oils, commonly known as essential oils, for the treatment or prevention of diseases. It is a complementary therapy aimed at addressing the entire individual, focusing not only on symptoms or diseases but also supporting the body’s natural ability to balance, regulate, heal, and sustain itself. Essential oils are made up of minuscule aromatic molecules that are easily absorbed through the skin and via inhalation.
How does skin application function?
Our skin possesses permeability, allowing active chemicals in essential oils to be absorbed similarly to the ingredients in common pharmaceuticals like hormone replacement therapy creams and nicotine patches. Several factors influence the absorption of essential oils through the skin. Massaging the area beforehand enhances circulation, leading to increased absorption of essential oils. Heat also boosts circulation, augmenting absorption. This explains why incorporating essential oils into a warm bath can enhance absorption. Some researchers suggest that essential oils might be more readily absorbed from areas of the skin with higher concentrations of sweat glands and hair follicles, such as the genitals, head, soles, palms, and armpits (Battaglia, 2003).
How do I breathe in essential oils?
The olfactory system encompasses all physical organs or cells associated with the sense of smell. When we inhale through the nose, airborne molecules interact with the olfactory organs and almost instantly affect the brain. Molecules inhaled through the nose or mouth also reach the lungs and interact with the respiratory system. Consequently, inhaled essential oils can impact the body through various systems and pathways. During inhalation, odor molecules travel through the nose and influence the brain through several receptor sites, including the limbic system, often called the “emotional brain.” The limbic system is directly linked to areas of the brain that regulate heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, memory, stress levels, and hormone balance (Higley & Higley, 1998). This connection clarifies why smells often evoke emotions. Understanding this, we can speculate how inhaling essential oils can have significant physiological and psychological effects.
What is an Aroma Stick, and how can it benefit me?
Aroma sticks offer a practical, versatile, and effective method for inhaling essential oils, allowing you to carry your preferred blend conveniently in your pocket or bag. The Aroma Stick is small and portable, allowing its owner the flexibility to decide when and how frequently to use it. Inhalation through the nasal route provides rapid absorption of essential oils, which can be beneficial when a quick response is necessary. To use an aroma stick inhaler, simply unscrew the cover and position the inhaler under your nostrils. Inhale slowly and deeply for a few breaths, drawing the aroma in through your nose and exhaling through your mouth. Utilizing it in small increments and frequently will yield the most effective results.
How long does the scent of an Aroma Stick last?
Ensure the inhaler is tightly closed to preserve the aroma for as long as possible. The duration of the scent depends on the specific essential oils used and how frequently you open it.
